The Library of the National Museum of Asian Art - Guimet and its rare books collections: The three collectors--Yûsaku Imaizumi, Paul Savatier and Henri Rivière.

The Guimet Museum opened in 1879 in Lyon, the birthplace of its founder Emile Guimet. For a number of reasons, it was subsequently transferred to Paris and renamed the National Museum of Asian Art -Guimet in 1889. The intention of the founder was to build a Museum of Religions, or "the factory of thoughts". Thus, the Library was built in the center of the Museum, the Rotunda. The Japanese rare books collection has at its core Buddhist texts brought back from Japan by Guimet himself after a journey in 1876. This collection grew over the years through generous donations made by book collectors.

Three collections are of particular importance:

  • A collection of Buddhist texts by Imaizumi Yûsaku, who translated them for the Guimet Museum in Lyon;
  • the botanical books collection of Dr. Savatier, who worked at the Yokosuka naval dockyard in Japan as a navy doctor at the end of the Edo period;
  • and the woodblock books collection of the painter Henri Rivière, who was deeply influenced by ukiyo-e and impressionism.
